中型轧钢车间生产的各种钢材，冷床，经轧钢机轧制后由热锯机（或剪切机），切成定尺长度，还需要冷却到常温，再进行矫直。轧制后的热轧件冷却时，由于连续生产，一般都是在缓慢的横向移动过程中逐渐冷却的。这种使轧件横向移动并冷却的设备，叫做冷床。
