冷床是轧钢生产中重要的辅助设备。冷床的作用在于将800℃以上的轧件冷却到150～100℃以下，同时使轧件按既定方向运行，在运输过程中应保证轧件不弯曲。由于轧制产品形状繁多相差悬殊，因此，轧钢车间的冷床型式是多种多样的。

由冷床入口辊道及升降挡板、横移小车、分钢装置、步进齿条冷床、编成组的圆钢，通过横移小车移送到冷床分钢装置，动齿条每步进一个周期，分钢装置就拨一根钢到静齿条上，使成组的圆钢逐根分配到每一个齿内，由于上冷床的圆钢温度很高。

拉钢式和往复多爪推齿式两种冷床对于圆钢都不太适用，容易拉斜、滚乱。冷却圆钢（管坯）以使用链式冷床较好，上钢一厂、大连钢厂的650轧钢车间都采用链式冷床，两者所不同之处在于：上钢一厂的圆钢搁在台架上，链条拉着圆钢缓慢前进，由于圆钢单重较大，一般不会乱滚。拉钢式冷床，其特点是利用单爪绳式或链式拉钢机，横向成批拖运轧件。大连钢厂的圆钢直接搁在链条上，前进过程中圆钢与链条无相对运动。两种链式冷床使用单位反映都较好。
